At age 15, in my first term at boarding school, I made an internal decision. Nobody told me to make it. It wasn’t written on a chalkboard. It happened silently, wiring itself into my nervous system like an absolute law of physics.
The decision was: being clever is unsafe.
For the next 16 years, that belief ran everything. I hid behind computers, shrank myself in group discussions, turned down leadership opportunities, and took jobs that were far below my capability — simply so nobody around me would feel threatened.
The Breakthrough Session in Bangkok
In 2002, sitting with an NLP practitioner in Bangkok, I was asked a single question that punctured the entire illusion:
“When did you first decide that hiding was the only way to stay safe?”
In that moment, the entire construct collapsed. I wasn’t inherently shy or incapable; I was simply executing an outdated security protocol designed by a scared 15-year-old.
Once you can clearly see the programme running your behaviour, you gain the power to rewrite it. That insight is the foundational cornerstone of everything we teach at Brain Zoo™ today.
